0:00 [SPEAKER_01]: 903 East Princeton Avenue sits on the northeast side of Spokane, Washington, a modest single story place on a street like 10,000 others in the inland northwest. 0:12 [SPEAKER_01]: The lawns are mostly kept, the cars are mostly older. 0:15 [SPEAKER_01]: Nobody has very much, but most people have enough, in the summer of 2023, three people were living in that house. 0:23 [SPEAKER_01]: And in the early morning hours, one of those three people called 911. 0:29 [SPEAKER_01]: It was not yet six. 0:30 [SPEAKER_01]: She was screaming by the time the Spokane police got to the house. 0:35 [SPEAKER_01]: One of the other two was beyond their help. 0:37 [SPEAKER_01]: The third was already gone. 0:39 [SPEAKER_01]: Running through the gray, pre-done streets on foot, 10 blocks out and closing. 0:44 [SPEAKER_01]: This was not a robbery. 0:46 [SPEAKER_01]: It was not a fight between strangers. 0:48 [SPEAKER_01]: It was something colder and more intimate. 1:01 [UNKNOWN]: Thank you for watching! 1:41 [SPEAKER_01]: Anthony Bryan's was 25, a core file will tell you how he died, and almost nothing about how he lived. 1:48 [SPEAKER_01]: That's usual in the trade. 1:50 [SPEAKER_01]: The killer gets the trial and the defense in the appeal. 1:53 [SPEAKER_01]: Years of paper, all of it circling the question of him. 1:57 [SPEAKER_01]: So here's what is known about the man on the other side of it. 2:00 [SPEAKER_01]: Anthony Bryan's worked as a correctional officer. 2:03 [SPEAKER_01]: He was good at it. 2:04 [SPEAKER_01]: The people who worked with him said it was because he could read a room and 2:09 [SPEAKER_01]: because he treated even the incarcerated men in his charge as people. 2:13 [SPEAKER_01]: He spent his working life around the consequences of other people's worst decisions, and he had learned somehow not to let it close him off. 2:22 [SPEAKER_01]: The descriptions of him are remarkably consistent, intelligent, kind-hearted, compassionate, a natural athlete who liked the mountains and the lakes and the wide open countries of the city. 2:35 [SPEAKER_01]: A man with an easy laugh who brought a little light into a room, it did not need to be the center of it. 2:41 [SPEAKER_01]: None of that shows up in a case file. 2:43 [SPEAKER_01]: It shows up in the people who loved him, and the way they each reach for the same handful of words, and there's the bitter irony in it. 2:50 [SPEAKER_01]: The same softness that made him good at a hard job, the readiness to see the person, and not the worst thing they had done, is what let him take in a younger man who had nothing. 3:00 [SPEAKER_01]: It's what put him in a bedroom with a person willing to kill him. 3:04 [SPEAKER_01]: He had a brother, Christopher Walker. 3:06 [SPEAKER_01]: who shared his birthday. 3:08 [SPEAKER_01]: Two brothers born on the same day, a shared day that, for their whole lives, had been a thing they had together. 3:15 [SPEAKER_01]: Christopher would later stand up in a courtroom, and try to explain what it was to lose him, and find the ordinary words for it, that were too small to carry the weight. 3:24 [SPEAKER_01]: To understand how Anthony Bryan's came to be sharing his home with the man who would kill him, you have to go back to a marriage, into this particular 3:34 [SPEAKER_01]: that runs underneath this whole story, like a buried wire. 3:38 [SPEAKER_01]: Anthony was married. 3:39 [SPEAKER_01]: He and his wife Hayley Davis had married in October of 2019, less than a year before the killing. 3:46 [SPEAKER_01]: By the summer of 2020, the marriage was in trouble. 3:50 [SPEAKER_01]: They were having problems. 3:51 [SPEAKER_01]: The sort that leads to the word divorce. 3:54 [SPEAKER_01]: They had, in fact, begun moving in that direction, though the marriage had never been illegally dissolved. 4:00 [SPEAKER_01]: They were in the language of the court records, separated in spirit, if not on paper. 4:05 [SPEAKER_01]: A married couple coming apart, with all the wreckage and ambivalence, and unfinished feelings that coming apart involves, Hayley had at some point in that separation, met someone else. 4:18 [SPEAKER_01]: a stranger summoned out of the anonymous churn of the internet into the middle of a real life. 4:23 [SPEAKER_01]: This stranger was a 19-year-old named Edward Martinez. 4:27 [SPEAKER_01]: He was from Sacramento, California, several states south, a young man with no roots in Spokane, and, as far as the record show, not much of anything anchoring him anywhere, they connected, and at some point the connection moved from the screen into the physical world. 4:44 [SPEAKER_01]: Edward Martinez came to Spokane, and the arrangement that would end in blood fell into place. 4:50 [SPEAKER_01]: Edward Martinez moved into the house on Princeton Avenue. 4:54 [SPEAKER_01]: The house where Anthony Bryan lived, he moved into the home of the husband of the woman he was seeing, and the three of them lived there together. 5:02 [SPEAKER_01]: Anthony, Haley, and Haley's young boyfriend, for the better part of three months, from June to August of 2020, 5:10 [SPEAKER_01]: The geometry of it was its own kind of strange, a husband, his wife, and his wife's new boyfriend, all under the same roof. 5:19 [SPEAKER_01]: Everything looked unremarkable from the outside. 5:21 [SPEAKER_01]: There were no police calls in those months, no reported blowups, no signs to the wider world that anything was wrong. 5:28 [SPEAKER_01]: There was a practical dimension to all this. 5:31 [SPEAKER_01]: Martinez and Hayley did not have much money to their names. 5:35 [SPEAKER_01]: Certainly not enough to go back to Sacramento. 5:37 [SPEAKER_01]: Anthony Bryan's, the man being cuckolded under his own roof, casually absorbed them both into his own home and life. 5:44 [SPEAKER_01]: And Anthony Bryan's was still in love with his wife. 5:48 [SPEAKER_01]: Still trying. 5:49 [SPEAKER_01]: Martinez moved in thinking he was stepping into the cleared-out space. 5:53 [SPEAKER_01]: A previous man had vacated. 5:55 [SPEAKER_01]: Instead, he was moving into another man's marriage, another man's home, another man's life. 6:00 [SPEAKER_01]: And that other man, far from resenting him, welcomed him, Brian's loved his wife, and because he loved her, he tried to be friend the young man, she had brought home. 6:10 [SPEAKER_01]: He tried to help her out. 6:12 [SPEAKER_01]: The two of them became friends, sharing a house, sharing meals, trying to make this impossible arrangement work, trying to be decent in a situation that gave him every excuse not to be. 6:24 [SPEAKER_01]: For nearly three months by all our word appearances, it did work. 6:28 [SPEAKER_01]: The records describe the household as functioning, seemingly without any issues, and it held until the small hours of August 13th, 2020. 6:38 [SPEAKER_01]: And then the man Anthony had taken in, took it apart, with a knife in the dark. 6:44 [SPEAKER_10]: No, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would, one would 7:15 [SPEAKER_05]: Yes, ma'am, I don't know what words were you at right now. 7:20 [UNKNOWN]: I'm completely unstoppable. 7:22 [UNKNOWN]: I think not breathing well. 7:25 [SPEAKER_10]: And the correctional officer, I get through the breath to the wound. 7:29 [SPEAKER_10]: That's really nice. 7:32 [SPEAKER_10]: Please do it to me. 7:33 [SPEAKER_10]: I trust you. 7:34 [SPEAKER_10]: You're so... Ma'am, it's been like that. 7:36 [SPEAKER_10]: Yes, I'm happy to see you all. 7:37 [UNKNOWN]: Thank you. 7:41 [SPEAKER_10]: He ran away. 7:43 [SPEAKER_05]: He ran away. 7:44 [SPEAKER_10]: He ran away. 7:46 [SPEAKER_10]: He ran away. 7:47 [SPEAKER_10]: He ran away. 7:48 [SPEAKER_10]: He ran away. 7:49 [SPEAKER_10]: He ran away. 7:51 [SPEAKER_10]: He ran away. 7:52 [SPEAKER_10]: He ran away. 7:53 [SPEAKER_10]: He ran away. 7:54 [SPEAKER_10]: He ran away. 7:55 [SPEAKER_10]: He ran away. 7:56 [SPEAKER_10]: He ran away. 7:57 [SPEAKER_10]: He ran away. 8:09 [SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, we're getting there, okay? 8:11 [SPEAKER_01]: Edward Martinez has to be looked at hard now. 8:14 [SPEAKER_01]: He was 19 years old in August of 2020. 8:17 [SPEAKER_01]: He'd come up from Sacramento with nothing much. 8:20 [SPEAKER_01]: A young man drifting into the city where he knew no one, but the woman from the ab. 8:25 [SPEAKER_01]: Dependent on the household, he had inserted himself into without the money to leave it. 8:30 [SPEAKER_01]: He was young, he was ruthless, and he was a guest in another man's house, living on that man's generosity. 8:37 [SPEAKER_01]: The night of August 12, 2020, began by all reports as an ordinary night in that not ordinary household. 8:46 [SPEAKER_01]: The three of them were together in the house, they were drinking. 8:49 [SPEAKER_01]: At some point, they were also using marijuana. 8:52 [SPEAKER_01]: Then later, they got out of Ouija board. 8:55 [SPEAKER_01]: Three people drinking, a little high, pushing a plant shed around a board in the dark, asking the empty air its questions. 9:03 [SPEAKER_01]: The three of them bent over a board meant to summon the dead. 9:06 [SPEAKER_01]: Hours before one of them would become one. 9:09 [SPEAKER_01]: As the night war on, the drinking continued. 9:12 [SPEAKER_01]: The evening turned towards sex. 9:14 [SPEAKER_01]: It was Martinez who suggested it. 9:16 [SPEAKER_01]: This was not something that happened to Martinez. 9:19 [SPEAKER_01]: He proposed it. 9:20 [SPEAKER_01]: The others agreed. 9:21 [SPEAKER_01]: They went to the bedroom. 9:23 [SPEAKER_01]: They began. 9:24 [SPEAKER_01]: And almost immediately. 9:25 [SPEAKER_01]: Martinez had a problem. 9:27 [SPEAKER_01]: He was unable to participate. 9:29 [SPEAKER_01]: He could not in the clinical language of the core record, get aroused. 9:34 [SPEAKER_01]: He blamed the alcohol. 9:36 [SPEAKER_01]: Whatever the cause, the encounter he proposed, was not going the way he imagined it. 9:41 [SPEAKER_01]: And he was the one who could not perform. 9:43 [SPEAKER_01]: He got off. 9:44 [SPEAKER_01]: He said he needed to use the bathroom, and he left the room. 9:47 [SPEAKER_01]: While he was gone, the other two continued. 9:50 [SPEAKER_01]: Anthony Brian's in his wife, a married couple, estranged but still married, still bound by whatever was left between them, continued with Alham. 9:59 [SPEAKER_01]: And when Martinez came back to the bedroom, that is what he found. 10:03 [SPEAKER_01]: the two of them together and him outside. 10:06 [SPEAKER_01]: The proposer of the whole thing. 10:08 [SPEAKER_01]: Now standing aside as a stranger. 10:11 [SPEAKER_01]: Haley saw him come back in. 10:12 [SPEAKER_01]: She asked him if he was okay. 10:14 [SPEAKER_01]: A simple question. 10:16 [SPEAKER_01]: Martinez said yes. 10:18 [SPEAKER_01]: He said it was okay. 10:19 [SPEAKER_01]: The knife was in the living room. 10:21 [SPEAKER_01]: Edward Martinez had to leave the bedroom, walked to the living room, find the knife, take it up, and carry it back. 10:29 [SPEAKER_01]: He came back into the bedroom with the knife, held where they could not see it. 10:33 [SPEAKER_01]: He got Anthony and Hayley to turn to reposition themselves so that Brian's back was facing him. 10:39 [SPEAKER_01]: He staged it. 10:40 [SPEAKER_01]: He maneuvered the man who had befriended him into the one position that would let him put a knife into a back that could not see it coming. 10:48 [SPEAKER_01]: And then, listener, he began to stab. 10:54 [SPEAKER_11]: Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on come on 11:19 [SPEAKER_10]: Okay, come out fast. 11:26 [SPEAKER_01]: Anthony immediately felt it. 11:28 [SPEAKER_01]: Hayley heard Anthony say, you're hurting me. 11:31 [SPEAKER_01]: Martinez did not stop. 11:33 [SPEAKER_01]: He stabbed Anthony Brian's in the back again and again. 11:37 [SPEAKER_01]: An Anthony wounded began to move to struggle. 11:40 [SPEAKER_01]: The body is blind to animal effort to get away from the thing that is killing it. 11:45 [SPEAKER_01]: In this, by his own words later, is what he found inconvenient. 11:49 [SPEAKER_01]: Brines would not hold still, so Martina has pushed him. 11:52 [SPEAKER_01]: He shoved the wounded man off the bed and down onto the floor. 11:56 [SPEAKER_01]: And on the floor, with Anthony Bryan's bleeding from the wounds already in his back, Edward Martinez, his own chilling phrase, finished the job. 12:05 [SPEAKER_01]: He stabbed him in the chest. 12:06 [SPEAKER_01]: He stabbed him in the abdomen. 12:08 [SPEAKER_01]: He kept going. 12:09 [SPEAKER_01]: When it was over, Anthony Bryan's had been stabbed approximately 20 times. 12:19 [SPEAKER_01]: and she was screaming for help into the early morning dark, and Martinez, the job finished, noticed her. 12:26 [SPEAKER_01]: He crossed to her, he picked her up by her arms, physically lifted her, and he put her on the bed. 12:36 [SPEAKER_10]: Where's our victim mask? 12:40 [SPEAKER_02]: Dog's friendly. 12:41 [SPEAKER_02]: Hi dog. 12:43 [SPEAKER_02]: Hi puppy. 12:43 [SPEAKER_02]: Where's he at? 12:44 [SPEAKER_10]: Dog's here. 12:45 [SPEAKER_10]: Dog's here. 12:46 [SPEAKER_10]: Dog's here. 12:48 [SPEAKER_10]: Keep that door open. 12:51 [SPEAKER_06]: Keep that door open. 12:53 [SPEAKER_06]: Dog's here. 12:53 [SPEAKER_02]: Dog's here. 12:53 [SPEAKER_02]: Dog's here. 12:54 [SPEAKER_02]: Dog's here. 12:59 [SPEAKER_02]: Anybody else here, man? 13:00 [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, we need max plus now! 13:02 [SPEAKER_02]: We need Chessil's bro. 13:05 [SPEAKER_02]: It's a battlex! 13:05 [SPEAKER_06]: Medic's in now, please. 13:07 [SPEAKER_06]: He's still alive, but... 13:08 [SPEAKER_06]: It's part of this broken place. 13:10 [SPEAKER_06]: He's got a faint pulse still, but... 13:13 [SPEAKER_06]: Got it. 13:14 [SPEAKER_06]: Now, there's several settlements. 13:17 [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. 13:18 [SPEAKER_08]: Okay, quickly. 13:19 [SPEAKER_05]: I know I know this is traumatic and I'm going to have a bunch of clicks. 13:23 [SPEAKER_05]: We got to start with the very basic. 13:25 [SPEAKER_09]: He's gone from here. 13:27 [SPEAKER_09]: He doesn't know that he's been very well. 13:28 [SPEAKER_09]: His name is Edward Andrew Martinez. 13:31 [SPEAKER_09]: Okay. 13:31 [SPEAKER_09]: Sacramento, California. 13:33 [SPEAKER_09]: Okay. 13:34 [SPEAKER_05]: Where did it where was he last seen? 13:36 [SPEAKER_09]: He was begging me to come out with him. 13:38 [SPEAKER_09]: I was in the bedroom holding him. 13:40 [SPEAKER_05]: Come out where? 13:41 [SPEAKER_09]: He made me take him somewhere. 13:43 [SPEAKER_09]: Okay. 13:44 [SPEAKER_05]: He begged me to drive him somewhere. 13:45 [SPEAKER_05]: Where did he go? 13:47 [SPEAKER_09]: I don't know, the one place he knows is Jay and Kay like her up. 13:50 [SPEAKER_05]: Last time he saw him, what was he wearing? 13:52 [SPEAKER_09]: He was wearing blue denim shorts. 13:55 [SPEAKER_09]: And he was wearing dark blue, a little first. 13:58 [SPEAKER_09]: And he was wearing his shirt. 14:00 [SPEAKER_09]: He sure, I don't remember what color you don't remember. 14:03 [SPEAKER_09]: No, I only saw his bottom half of us. 14:05 [SPEAKER_09]: Doesn't begin out. 14:07 [SPEAKER_10]: What's he stabbed at? 14:08 [SPEAKER_10]: Everywhere. 14:08 [SPEAKER_02]: Everywhere. 14:09 [SPEAKER_02]: So, couple on the back. 14:10 [SPEAKER_02]: Go. 14:11 [SPEAKER_02]: We have one more sticker. 14:14 [SPEAKER_02]: got a uncovered stab with a bereft. 14:16 [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, you want to start compression? 14:18 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, we're ain't going to cut it. 14:21 [SPEAKER_10]: We're going to work in the airway this can't go. 14:24 [SPEAKER_02]: Do you know there's sticker to the matter at this point? 14:26 [SPEAKER_02]: Uh, if you have, oh no. 14:27 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no, yeah. 14:28 [SPEAKER_10]: We can fix that. 14:30 [SPEAKER_10]: I want to see you. 14:31 [SPEAKER_10]: You can't leave us with a restricted gun. 14:33 [SPEAKER_05]: How do you know him? 14:36 [SPEAKER_09]: you met online a few weeks ago. 14:38 [SPEAKER_05]: Is he, were you guys in a dating relationship or something? 14:41 [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, we were talking online for like a week or two when I went down the couch, where did you pick them up? 14:46 [SPEAKER_05]: Okay. 14:46 [SPEAKER_09]: And probably I'm down here. 14:47 [SPEAKER_05]: So has he been living here? 14:48 [SPEAKER_09]: Yes, he's been living here for about two months. 14:50 [SPEAKER_05]: The male who's been injured. 14:52 [SPEAKER_09]: He's my ex-husband. 14:54 [SPEAKER_05]: Does he live here as well? 14:55 [SPEAKER_05]: Yes. 14:55 [SPEAKER_05]: Okay, did he, did those two get into it? 14:58 [SPEAKER_05]: Over something? 15:00 [SPEAKER_09]: I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't 15:27 [SPEAKER_05]: So that's why he's nearing. 15:29 [SPEAKER_05]: Okay. 15:31 [SPEAKER_05]: How did the stabbing occur? 15:33 [SPEAKER_09]: We were just messing around with the bed. 15:35 [SPEAKER_09]: And he said it was okay. 15:37 [SPEAKER_09]: And the next thing I said was okay. 15:38 [SPEAKER_09]: And we were in said it was okay that we were messing around. 15:41 [SPEAKER_09]: Okay. 15:41 [SPEAKER_09]: And then he's just having the Anthony in the bag and Anthony said, how's stop? 15:45 [SPEAKER_09]: What are you doing? 15:46 [SPEAKER_09]: And I just don't know if he just kept going out of the hand. 15:49 [SPEAKER_09]: We're on the bedroom time to get away. 15:51 [SPEAKER_09]: He just kept stopping me, too. 15:53 [SPEAKER_05]: Okay, so he was trying to flee you all there in there. 15:55 [SPEAKER_05]: Are you in? 15:56 [SPEAKER_09]: No, I'm not. 15:57 [SPEAKER_09]: I told him I was leaving. 16:00 [SPEAKER_01]: Then he got dressed, he got dressed, and he walked out of the house on Princeton Avenue, into the gray streets and he ran. 16:06 [SPEAKER_01]: The first officers reached the house just before 6 in the morning, sent there by a woman screaming 911 call, and they found what was left. 16:15 [SPEAKER_01]: Anthony Bryan was alive when they got there. 16:18 [SPEAKER_01]: Barely, they called immediately for medics. 16:20 [SPEAKER_01]: The paramedics did everything that could be done. 16:23 [SPEAKER_01]: They got him to a hospital, and at the hospital, despite all of it, 16:27 [SPEAKER_01]: Anthony Bryan's died 25 years old, a correction officer, a brother, a friend, dead before most of the city he lived in, had even woken up. 16:38 [SPEAKER_01]: There is a moment, listener, caught on a responding officer's body camera. 16:42 [SPEAKER_01]: that holds the whole human weight of that morning. 16:45 [SPEAKER_01]: In a few seconds, it belongs in the recording, alongside the autopsy and time stamps, as the medics worked on Anthony, and then moved him. 16:54 [SPEAKER_01]: Haley was outside the house in the gray early white, in the chaos of arriving patrol cars and radios. 17:01 [SPEAKER_01]: In the camera catches the instant she sees him. 17:03 [SPEAKER_01]: She sees Anthony. 17:05 [SPEAKER_01]: The man she had married the autumn before, the man she was leaving and had not finished leaving, gravely wounded, and being loaded into the back of the ambulance. 17:15 [SPEAKER_01]: Whatever was tangled and unfinished between them, whatever the long strained summer in that house had done to the two of them, what comes out of her in that moment, it's not complicated at all, it is the oldest sound there is, she comes apart. 17:30 [SPEAKER_05]: It's okay, so he's got a pulse, he's all right, okay? 17:39 [SPEAKER_05]: Haley, Haley, I need you to listen to me, all right? 17:44 [SPEAKER_05]: We need to think real, real hard work he would have gone. 17:49 [SPEAKER_09]: He really doesn't know anything down here. 17:52 [SPEAKER_09]: We go to the sensory. 17:55 [SPEAKER_09]: Here we go to the lens. 17:56 [SPEAKER_05]: Does he have any friends here? 17:57 [SPEAKER_05]: No. 17:58 [SPEAKER_09]: He's literally got no one here. 18:00 [SPEAKER_10]: Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, 18:24 [SPEAKER_05]: No, I understand. 18:25 [SPEAKER_05]: I understand. 18:26 [SPEAKER_05]: I'm not trying to give you false hope, but I'll tell you too if he was expired that ambulance would have never left this location. 18:35 [SPEAKER_05]: So he was alive when he left here. 18:37 [SPEAKER_09]: I feel so incredibly guilty. 18:38 [SPEAKER_09]: I don't even have a stab room like any of you protect family. 18:41 [SPEAKER_09]: No. 18:42 [SPEAKER_05]: Well, sounds like it happened really fast. 18:49 [SPEAKER_01]: She had spent the night watching the situation she was living in, detonate, she had screamed into a phone for help, and now she is in her own front yard, watching a gurney carry her husband away, the body camera simply records it, without mercy and without comment, it is the sound of a person in real time, understanding that a man she loved is not coming back. 19:12 [SPEAKER_01]: Anthony Bryan's was, by then, already beyond the reach of any of it. 19:16 [SPEAKER_01]: He did not know she was there. 19:18 [SPEAKER_01]: He'd not hear her. 19:19 [SPEAKER_01]: He was carried into the ambulance, and driven away under whites and siren. 19:23 [SPEAKER_01]: And the last thing his home had to give him was the sound of his wife screaming his name as the doors closed. 19:30 [SPEAKER_01]: The defense would try to use her to make her part of the machine that supposedly broke Edward Martinez, but she did not stab anyone. 19:39 [SPEAKER_01]: The man who did stab someone, Edward Martinez, meanwhile, was running. 19:44 [SPEAKER_01]: He left on foot, and he was moving through the residential streets of Northeast Poland. 19:49 [SPEAKER_01]: In the early white, and for a little while, the police did not know exactly where he was. 19:54 [SPEAKER_01]: They set up a perimeter, a canine unit, a dog and its handler, came to the scene to track him, but in the end, it was not the dog that found him. 20:03 [SPEAKER_04]: Glenn check what you were reporting. 20:04 [SPEAKER_00]: Hi, my name's Katie, I'm a dispatcher of Sacramento Police Dispatch. 20:09 [SPEAKER_00]: I've got a caller on the other line who's son called them from Silicon Washington, saying he was running for his life. 20:14 [SPEAKER_00]: Is this the correct phone number? 20:15 [SPEAKER_04]: The peasants will can yet. 20:17 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, okay, let me bring her on. 20:19 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, man, you're connected with Silicon Police, good. 20:22 [SPEAKER_04]: How long ago did your son call you? 20:24 [SPEAKER_00]: 708. 20:24 [SPEAKER_04]: It's about five seven minutes ago and he said he was running for his life, did he say where he was at? 20:30 [SPEAKER_12]: That's what he told us, and he said he's at the 1500 block-up, what we have in his errands. 20:38 [SPEAKER_12]: So, there's a park near there, and he was walking in there, running in an alley and saw some stranger and now, so he could use the phone. 20:48 [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, fine. 20:48 [SPEAKER_04]: He can't even call 911 himself. 20:51 [SPEAKER_04]: I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I 21:13 [SPEAKER_01]: Officers went to the area of Brought Avenue in Holina Street, about 10 blocks from the house, and there they found Edward Martinez, and they took him into custody without incident. 21:24 [SPEAKER_01]: He did not fight. 21:25 [SPEAKER_01]: The fight, such as it was, had been saved for the unarmed man in the bedroom. 21:30 [SPEAKER_01]: He was 19 years old. 21:31 [SPEAKER_01]: He was under arrest for murder. 21:33 [SPEAKER_01]: At the police station, a detective named Brian Sessnik sat down with Edward Martina's Brian was the lead investigator, and the conversation he was about to have would be a central piece of evidence in the case. 21:46 [SPEAKER_01]: Before he asked anything, Brian read Martina's his rights. 21:50 [SPEAKER_01]: Martina's understood and weighed them and agreed to talk, and then, out of recording later played in court, he confessed to the murder of Anthony Brian's. 21:58 [SPEAKER_08]: Any, and we're going to go back, Eddie. 22:02 [SPEAKER_08]: Any, my name's Brian Sessnik, I'm a detective, I'm a police department, I'm a detective, I'm a Stroh Sol, they tell you this sort of this recorded, how you're going to be recorded, I'm basically a station. 22:13 [SPEAKER_08]: There's two of my craziest thoughts. 22:15 [SPEAKER_08]: Well, the reason I'm here is obviously that I know what happened. 22:20 [SPEAKER_08]: That's my job. 22:22 [SPEAKER_08]: My hope is that I can just talk to you and tell me whatever you want. 22:27 [SPEAKER_08]: I'm just taking it back. 22:29 [SPEAKER_08]: So what's going to happen? 22:30 [SPEAKER_08]: We're going to have someone come in here. 22:33 [SPEAKER_08]: They're going to, we're seeing a search warrant, get photographs, box files, which is your DNA. 22:40 [SPEAKER_08]: They'll be in here when that's done. 22:42 [SPEAKER_08]: You're going to be booked in the jail. 22:44 [SPEAKER_08]: You're going to be charged with first-degree murder, OK? 22:49 [SPEAKER_08]: He's done. 22:50 [SPEAKER_08]: He's done. 22:51 [SPEAKER_08]: You killed him. 22:54 [SPEAKER_08]: If you change your mind, be said you want to talk to me about this. 22:57 [SPEAKER_08]: You can always send a cave, I don't need to lower, freeze it down. 23:04 [SPEAKER_08]: I don't want to get into the work, I don't want to deny it. 23:08 [SPEAKER_08]: So before we go into everything, I just want to ask what, why did you say you wanted an attorney and then decide to talk? 23:15 [SPEAKER_08]: Is it because you didn't think he was dead? 23:17 [SPEAKER_08]: I mean, what? 23:20 [SPEAKER_08]: No, it's just, I don't know, I think it's too much, I think. 23:24 [SPEAKER_08]: Thank you too much, but they didn't actually 23:30 [SPEAKER_08]: What's going on with your life? 23:34 [SPEAKER_07]: I just spent my whole life and I'm like, I'm doing the right thing and it took me over mentally and thought I was going crazy. 23:45 [SPEAKER_07]: Literally thought that there's someone else in my head. 23:49 [SPEAKER_07]: I got my phone and he wanted my head. 23:53 [SPEAKER_07]: My knee testing. 23:55 [SPEAKER_08]: Do you have a counselor? 23:56 [SPEAKER_08]: No. 23:58 [SPEAKER_08]: Right. 24:00 [SPEAKER_08]: Yeah. 24:01 [SPEAKER_08]: Oh, recesses. 24:02 [SPEAKER_08]: That's a real life. 24:04 [SPEAKER_08]: What about the K-100 finger? 24:08 [SPEAKER_08]: My girlfriend's got a matching Q. 24:11 [SPEAKER_08]: Okay. 24:12 [SPEAKER_08]: Does it mean anything? 24:13 [SPEAKER_08]: Or is it just because we're together? 24:15 [SPEAKER_08]: Just because we're together. 24:17 [SPEAKER_08]: I'm probably not. 24:18 [UNKNOWN]: Yeah. 24:19 [SPEAKER_07]: I guess I was the first one to like her. 24:21 [SPEAKER_07]: I'm a profile. 24:21 [SPEAKER_07]: She matched with me. 24:23 [SPEAKER_07]: And from there, we just clicked. 24:26 [SPEAKER_07]: It's just so natural talking to her. 24:30 [SPEAKER_07]: You know, I was at point in time where I just couldn't trust anybody or nobody, even people that I love. 24:34 [SPEAKER_07]: Sometimes I thought we're shifting in. 24:38 [SPEAKER_07]: I don't know. 24:40 [SPEAKER_07]: I just had the same things in earlier. 24:42 [SPEAKER_07]: I was in a stopper and just went like that. 24:46 [SPEAKER_07]: And a lot changed after that. 24:49 [SPEAKER_08]: Like I just, I like really cut everybody off for my new life. 24:55 [SPEAKER_08]: Did you know about her at that point? 24:59 [SPEAKER_07]: I knew her situation, she was still living with her husband, who she is claims to be divorced with. 25:06 [SPEAKER_07]: That first was okay with the idea of it, because I didn't think any, she told me, he's not going to be on a weird diet. 25:11 [SPEAKER_07]: He's not going to do the things that he did do, and did drive me out the edge. 25:16 [SPEAKER_07]: So that was the living situation in the house. 25:19 [SPEAKER_07]: It was fine, you know, for a while, it just, it just functioned, everything just worked, and there were moments where I would find text messages between them. 25:27 [SPEAKER_07]: things I didn't want to see, and I, you know, I keep telling her about it, I keep telling her and she keeps ignoring it, you know. 25:35 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm curious as to, have they arrested his wife? 25:40 [SPEAKER_03]: Anthony's wife. 25:41 [SPEAKER_03]: Get not you only to put her in cups. 25:43 [SPEAKER_03]: All right. 25:44 [SPEAKER_03]: And so, for a reason, apparently, what they said on page two on their website, 25:52 [SPEAKER_03]: So there's a two men live together, okay, Anthony is married, okay, that the suspect is his wife's boyfriend. 26:03 [SPEAKER_03]: I just think that she needs me. 26:05 [SPEAKER_03]: She needs to be looked at pretty seriously. 26:07 [SPEAKER_03]: Girl has created this situation. 26:11 [SPEAKER_03]: This person who stabbed my nephew, she is just as responsible for this. 26:18 [SPEAKER_07]: And he started a... 26:21 [SPEAKER_08]: I started taking shots from Jane, and I'm going to shop at the JLT, you can use your polish off bottle and take a couple. 26:30 [SPEAKER_07]: We had like four shots each. 26:31 [SPEAKER_07]: I was like one of the bigger MSGM Jane bottles, and it just took that. 26:37 [SPEAKER_07]: It also took a couple of devs. 26:43 [UNKNOWN]: You know, the other devs, right? 26:47 [UNKNOWN]: Well, you tell me, just we're on the same page. 26:49 [UNKNOWN]: It's like a T.A.C. 26:52 [SPEAKER_08]: wax, and they get really hot out of the inhaled, you know, so y'all were sitting around doing that, how are things going? 27:01 [SPEAKER_08]: At first, at first, when I was pretty weird, I was playing on a Ouija board, playing on a Ouija board. 27:07 [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. 27:08 [SPEAKER_07]: And he handed me a saga about how he wants to summon a demon into the house, even though 27:19 [SPEAKER_07]: names Zozo or whatever, he wanted to, he was like, bad in for Zozo or come and like, you know, be there and the thing looks where he wasn't going to be there. 27:27 [SPEAKER_07]: Like they said no and I asked it a couple of things and got some interesting answers. 27:36 [SPEAKER_07]: Haley comes on to me, wants me to have sex with her, right in front of him and he's sitting like right there, like on the corner. 27:47 [SPEAKER_07]: I've got distance from the bed and so lose room are you and now I've had word ours and he's just in there you know I was really drunk so I couldn't you know I couldn't work anything up for some reason I need that drink sometimes I can't nobody just goes numb and I have a story but you couldn't get hard yeah basically okay that's what happens next she starts trying to get me somewhere it's not working I 28:13 [SPEAKER_07]: We start messing around and then Anthony starts coming up rubbing my and her feed And just I don't know like it made me feel uncomfortable, but you know, I was already uncomfortable So it just like added to it and I just I don't know I started feeling a deep anger inside of me Just building building and Like after a while I literally took a step in the bathroom light wasn't on 28:39 [SPEAKER_07]: And all I can think of my head, as soon as I walk in that bathroom, it's like literally I was to find a knife and then to lost it. 28:47 [SPEAKER_07]: And then obviously you went back to the bedroom, right? 28:50 [SPEAKER_07]: And I'm sorry to them. 28:52 [SPEAKER_07]: No, I actually kind of did this pretty sneaky. 28:55 [SPEAKER_07]: And that's what I felt bad about, and that was pretty sadistic about it. 28:59 [SPEAKER_07]: I took the knife and I literally hid it between my last cheeks. 29:03 [SPEAKER_07]: It's no longer the same you walk in and you were completely naked at that point. 29:05 [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. 29:08 [SPEAKER_07]: Sure enough, when I sat down, I moved it to where I could easily grab it, and I said, well, since you guys are doing this right here, you might as well change the view, you know? 29:17 [SPEAKER_07]: And I got him to turn around right in, he's back with facing me, so I don't worry, I don't really when you walked in. 29:22 [SPEAKER_07]: They were facing me on the bed, and when I was sitting like this on the bed, when I laid down, hit my knife, and then I picked up my phone, and not my phone, I picked up her phone, 29:39 [SPEAKER_07]: and I turned the light on and used that as a distraction, the light on the phone. 29:44 [SPEAKER_07]: And I just did what I never thought I would do ever. 29:50 [SPEAKER_07]: I was when I came back and I was taking a piss. 29:54 [SPEAKER_07]: And I see him telling me to join in, knowing that I'm not going to. 29:59 [SPEAKER_07]: And I don't know what it was, but just seeing that 30:09 [UNKNOWN]: adding up. 30:11 [UNKNOWN]: I felt like nothing mattered. 30:13 [SPEAKER_07]: And like literally, I said to you. 30:17 [SPEAKER_07]: And I feel bad about it now. 30:19 [SPEAKER_07]: I feel remorse now. 30:20 [SPEAKER_07]: I genuinely understand to me because he was an 30:27 [SPEAKER_01]: Much of the sequence is known because Martinez himself laid it out, the encounter is failure to participate, leaving the room, coming back, getting the knife, positioning them, and of course the 20 stab wounds. 30:41 [SPEAKER_01]: He told the police himself that anger had time to build. 30:44 [SPEAKER_01]: He told them without meaning to, that he had time to choose. 30:48 [SPEAKER_01]: But underneath all of the gestures towards explanation, 30:52 [SPEAKER_01]: The spine of the confession was a man describing, step-by-step, how he had decided to kill another man. 30:58 [SPEAKER_01]: When the case came to trial in the spring of 2023, almost three years after the killing, it made the prosecution story simple. 31:06 [SPEAKER_01]: The jury began deliberating on a Monday afternoon, and on Wednesday they came back, and they found Edward Martinez guilty of murder in the first degree. 31:15 [SPEAKER_01]: The sentence in came in July of 2023, 31:18 [SPEAKER_01]: and it was the moment the case stopped being about Edward Martinez and became at last about Anthony Bryan's and the people he left behind. 31:27 [SPEAKER_01]: The family asked the judge for the maximum. 31:30 [SPEAKER_01]: Judge John Cooney of the Spokane County Superior Court spoke about the thing they he 31:35 [SPEAKER_01]: Like everyone who touches on this case could not get past the fact that you could stab someone 20 times he said is really behind any kind of comprehension and then he sent its Edward Martinez to 27 years in prison for the premeditated murder of Anthony Bryan's. 31:52 [SPEAKER_01]: Martinez was 22 by the time he was sentenced. 31:55 [SPEAKER_01]: While Anthony Bryan's will stay forever 25, Martinez will be in his middle 40s when he comes out, older than Anthony Bryan's ever got to be. 32:04 [SPEAKER_01]: With most of his life still ahead of him, Edward Martinez only received 27 years. 32:10 [SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't feel like justice. 32:12 [SPEAKER_09]: and he was telling the air and then he was telling the air and he just stopped and he was hurt that he's really hurt in the air. 32:17 [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, time to do you think he stabbed him? 32:19 [SPEAKER_09]: Oh, come on, so much. 32:21 [SPEAKER_10]: Really? 32:22 [SPEAKER_10]: But before I thought he was like, question him out first. 32:25 [SPEAKER_10]: It was probably because of me. 32:28 [SPEAKER_10]: 16 times. 32:29 [SPEAKER_10]: We're going the back of the chest. 32:33 [SPEAKER_09]: Like, it's really huge. 32:34 [SPEAKER_10]: And the full is like, guys, super red thing. 32:36 [SPEAKER_10]: It's a lot of things. 32:39 [SPEAKER_05]: How big is the knife? 32:43 [SPEAKER_09]: It was a utility silver knife, it was kind of boxy. 32:50 [SPEAKER_08]: Was it like a foreign song blade? 32:52 [SPEAKER_08]: Yeah. 32:53 [SPEAKER_08]: Did you say anything to him? 32:55 [SPEAKER_07]: No. 32:55 [SPEAKER_07]: Well, I think I said something words out of fury, but it wasn't anything like rationality. 32:59 [SPEAKER_07]: It was probably just a finger. 33:00 [SPEAKER_07]: What did he say? 33:02 [SPEAKER_07]: First thing he said was please stop. 33:04 [SPEAKER_07]: You can stop it with this. 33:07 [SPEAKER_07]: What about Haley? 33:08 [SPEAKER_07]: What was she doing? 33:09 [SPEAKER_07]: It's just just saying you're scaring me, you're scaring me. 33:12 [SPEAKER_10]: It's just like that, it's like a free switch.
